I purchased this 1990 Astra GTE 16v as a cost cutting move. Before I had a Rover turbo which was a great car, but I wanted to go back a step to when things weren't quite so complicated and expensive. The insurance is a lot cheaper and there is no turbo or limited slip differential to add expensive problems.
The car is a real drivers car and this makes it the most enjoyable of all the cars I have owned.
The brief for the modifying of the car was to improve the looks, performance and handling, but to keep the running costs down . This means no 17" wheels or huge bodykits, it is a drivers car primarily, and I will get my enjoyment from improving its limits in handling and performance in as economical way as possible.
Specification:
Engine:
20XE 2 litre 16v engine, K+N panel filter & drilled airbox, modified throttle plate, NGK-R spark plugs, full 2.5" mild steel custom exhaust system with 3.5" tail pipe, colour coded camcover, polished bits and bobs, modified breather system.
Transmission:
F20 gearbox, standard clutch
Suspension:
-30mm PI springs & shocks all round.
Front: PVD polished alloy top strutbrace
Wheels & Tyres:
15" Astra GSi 'Fan style' alloys with 195/50 R 15 Toyo Proxy T1-S tyres and locking wheelbolts.
Brakes:
Front: 4 stud V6 disks (284mm), V6 calipers and standard V6 pads, DOT5.1 brake fluid
Rear: Standard GTE 16v rear disks, pads and calipers
Body:
Colour coded bump strips and tailgate handle. Rub strips removed, light washer jets removed and smoothed over. Rear vinyl trim removed, debadged all round. Astra mk4 red side repeators, meshed grill.
Interior:
Black Astra mk4 Coupe front seats, GTE trim, sublevel controller, Chrome gearknob, Mountney 330mm Alcantara steering wheel, all sound deadening and carpet removed, black rear bench
ICE:
Pioneer 45x4W headunit, Boschmann 320W amp, Kenwood 240W amp, Alpine 12" R-type 600W sub, Dragster 10" sub, sub volume controller, dynamat soundproofing, Autoleads connections
Security:
Secret, but there is plenty ;).
